The Jazz Ensembles at Hempfield High School have enjoyed a strong tradition of success.  In addition to performances at the ‘home’ jazz festivals, the Jazz Ensembles also perform at several high school festivals and civic events across the region.  The Jazz Ensembles is under the direction of Mr. Gumble.

Jazz I is one of the premiere jazz/popular performing ensembles in the region, having earned numerous Superior ratings, Best Section Awards and Soloist awards at festivals throughout the Central PA and Philadelphia area.

Jazz I plays advanced literature that challenges the capabilities of our most experienced players. The instrumentation for Jazz I is fixed: 5 saxes (2 altos, 2 tenors, 1 baritone), 5 trumpets, 5 trombones, 1 drum set, 1 piano, 1 bass, 1 guitar. More instrumentalists may be used if called upon by the literature.

Jazz I rehearses twice a week after school until 5:00 PM through the second week of May and performs at festivals, civic events, HSD concerts, and competitions across the region.

Jazz II is a developing ensemble where students are exposed to a number of jazz/popular styles with an emphasis on developing ensemble/improvisatory skills.

Jazz II plays intermediate-medium/advanced literature that is chosen to teach the fundamentals of big band swing and modern popular music. The instrumentation for Jazz II is fixed by instrument (saxophone, trumpet, trombone, rhythm) but may include students who are interested in doubling on a secondary instrument (by director approval).

Jazz II rehearses once a week after school until 5:00 PM through the second week of May and performs at local festivals and HSD concerts.
